Newcastle United and Liverpool have surged ahead of Arsenal in the pursuit of Sporting CP center-back Goncalo Inacio, according to recent transfer reports.

The highly-rated Portugal international, with five caps to his name, has garnered attention across Europe for his consistent performances since breaking into Sporting's senior team in October 2020. Since his debut, Inacio has amassed over 150 appearances for Sporting, contributing to their Primeira Liga and Taca da Liga double in one season and subsequent Taca da Liga triumph the following year.

At just 22 years old, Inacio has also impressed on the European stage, making 25 appearances in continental competitions, including the Champions League and Europa League.

Reports from Portuguese outlet Record indicate that both Newcastle United and Liverpool are leading the charge to bring Inacio to the Premier League. However, any potential deal will have to wait until the summer transfer window, as Sporting is not entertaining offers during the final hours of the January transfer window.

Newcastle's interest in Inacio coincides with speculation surrounding the future of captain Jamaal Lascelles, whose contract is nearing its end. Despite reported interest from Turkish side Besiktas, Magpies manager Eddie Howe has emphasized Lascelles' importance to the team.

Liverpool's pursuit of Inacio may have been influenced by recent comments from star defender Virgil van Dijk regarding the club's managerial transition. Van Dijk's remarks hinted at potential changes at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp's decision to step down as manager at the end of the season.

Inacio's future remains uncertain as top clubs vie for his signature, but with Newcastle and Liverpool at the forefront of the race, his arrival in the Premier League could be imminent come the summer transfer window.
